When Life Feels Heavy, Flat or Hard to Engage With

Low mood and depression can quietly shape how life feels day to day. For some people it shows up as sadness or hopelessness. For others, it’s numbness, exhaustion, or a sense of disconnection from themselves and the world around them.

You may still be functioning – working, caring for others, meeting expectations, yet feel as though something vital has gone missing.

If this resonates, it doesn’t mean you’re weak or broken. It often means your system has been carrying more than it has been able to process.

When Low Mood Persists

Many people experiencing depression or low mood are not unfamiliar with support.

They may have tried counselling, medication, lifestyle changes, or strategies to “think differently.”

Some of these approaches can help, yet for some people the heaviness remains.

Grief can show up in many ways, including:

This can be deeply frustrating, especially when others expect improvement.

Depression as a Nervous System Response

Low mood and depression are not always the result of faulty thinking or a lack of positivity.

In many cases, they reflect a nervous system that has moved into a state of protection or shutdown, often after prolonged stress, loss, overwhelm, or experiences that exceeded the system’s capacity to cope.

When this happens, the body may conserve energy, dampen emotion, or disconnect as a way of surviving. Over time, this protective response can begin to feel like depression.

This is not a failure to cope.

It is an adaptive response that has not yet had the opportunity to resolve.

Experiences That Can Contribute

People experiencing persistent low mood or depression often describe backgrounds that include:

These experiences are not always recognised as trauma, yet they can leave a lasting imprint on how the nervous system responds.

Why Insight Alone Doesn’t Always Help

Understanding why you feel low can be important, but insight alone does not always change how the body and nervous system respond.

You may know that circumstances have improved, that others care, or that there are reasons for hope, and still feel flat, numb, or weighed down.

When the nervous system is in a state of shutdown, encouragement and cognitive strategies may not reach the level where change needs to happen.

For many people, lasting change requires working directly with how the nervous system has adapted over time.

How Trauma Resolution Work Can Support Low Mood

Trauma resolution work focuses on supporting the nervous system to move out of protective shutdown and towards greater regulation and responsiveness.

Rather than pushing motivation or positivity, this approach works gently with the brain–body system, allowing energy, engagement, and emotional range to return gradually and safely.

For some people, this can mean:

This work does not force change. It supports the conditions in which change can occur.

This work is not about fixing who you are, but about supporting your system to recover its natural capacity for engagement and vitality.

Exploring Support Further

If low mood or depression feels linked to longer-term stress, loss, or unresolved experiences, you may find it helpful to explore our trauma & PTSD recovery approach, or to read more about how we work with the nervous system to support resolution over time.

People may arrive here after counselling or other forms of support have helped them cope, but deeper trauma patterns remain.

These pages explain how grief can be supported when it has overwhelmed the nervous system, without diminishing its meaning or significance.
